Sustainability has been part of Valneva since the Group joined the United Nations Global Compact a decade ago. Valneva’s newly defined sustainability strategy “Reaching Further Where Most Needed” aims to amplify and expand the company’s positive impact on global health.
Valneva has translated the core elements of this strategy into three pillars aligned with its purpose and mission that form the basis for its sustainability strategy: Protecting lives, Preserving the Planet, Reaching People.
Protecting Lives
Valneva’s sustainability strategy emphasizes its focus on society through the “Protecting Lives” pillar. We act to advance global public health through innovative vaccine development, equitable access, and high safety standards. By focusing on diseases with significant unmet medical needs and partnering with key public health organizations, Valneva works to ensure that life-saving vaccines are developed, made accessible to underserved populations, and maintained to the highest levels of safety and quality.
- 50% of our commercial and R&D pipeline products (Phase 1-3 of clinical trials) are Neglected Tropical Diseases (listed by WHO), affecting underserved populations in LMICs.
Reaching People
Integrity is one of Valneva’s core values and guides its approach to all business activities. Valneva knows that trust in our products starts with trust in its business practices, and we hold ourselves and our business partners to high standards of ethical behavior. This is reflected in Valneva’s “Reaching People” pillar. Valneva actively fosters open communication, supports employee well-being, and values diverse perspectives across its global workforce. We aim to attract, retain, and grow individuals at every stage of their careers. At the same time, Valneva embeds ethics into every aspect of its operations—from upholding human rights and workplace equity to ensuring responsible research practices—reinforcing its dedication to doing business with integrity.
- Valneva is proud that all its employees have participated in performance and career reviews and 60% of its workforce is made up of women.
Each year, companies in France with at least 50 employees must calculate and publish the Gender Equality Index. This legal obligation allows companies to measure pay gaps between women and men and highlights areas for improvement in case of disparity.
In the form of a score out of 100, the index consists of four criteria that evaluate inequalities according to:
- The gender pay gap,
- The distribution gap of individual raises,
- The number of female employees receiving raises upon returning from maternity leave,
- Parity among the 10 highest salaries.
Valneva has published the result for its French entities (Valneva SE & Valneva France SAS), which for the year 2025 is a score of 96/100. View the accompanying infographic in English or in French.
Preserving the Planet
Valneva recognizes the importance of reducing the ways in which itsou business contributes to climate change and of optimizing its use of renewable, recyclable, and reusable resources. The Group is taking action now while continuing to assess options for more ambitious goals. This is exemplified by its “Preserving the Planet” pillar. Valneva is working to reduce its environmental footprint by transitioning to a low-carbon business model and integrating sustainability principles across its operations. By embedding sustainability into its culture and strategy, Valneva seeks to address climate risks and create lasting value for stakeholders.
- In 2025, 70% of the electricity consumption at Valneva sites was covered by guarantees of origin, leading to a 51% reduction in Scope 2 emissions (market-based) compared to 2024.
